YES - Michael Freeston, director, training and quality assurance,Pre-School Learning Alliance
Without individual learning targets, or to use a more friendly termoutcomes, how would parents and practitioners know that their input ishaving a positive effect on their children? Individual learning targetsare a helpful indicator of whether the strategies being adopted aresuccessfully meeting his or her individual needs. It is how the targetsare evaluated and how this information is used that is the biggerquestion for the alliance.
YES BUT - Judith Hibbert, head of professional development, Aspect
It depends how they are used. It's no good just setting targets out ofthin air. There needs to be a dialogue with children and young peopleabout their learning. Talking with children about where they weresuccessful and what they need to focus on for the future helps childrenarticulate their learning. If you don't give feedback they don'tunderstand what they have got right and what they haven't. Children needto feel they own the targets and setting targets should be done indiscussion between children and teachers.
