Opinion: Debate - Should age restrictions be put on magazines for girls?

1 min read
At its annual conference this week, the Association of Teachers and Lecturers is to debate a resolution calling for the sale of magazines for girls to be restricted by age because of the "lurid and explicit" content of some of the publications.

NO - Gill Tishler, chief executive, YWCA England and Wales

Age limits won't prevent teenagers reading magazines. We'd all do better to focus on encouraging magazines to improve content. Young women get lots of information from them, so it should be accurate and sensitive.

Most of the time it is, but they could do more. We'd like to see greater diversity of young women pictured and quoted, more emphasis on building strong self esteem not tied to appearance and more information on how to deal with issues in "real life" stories.

YES - Ralph Surman, deputy head teacher at Cantrell Primary School in Nottingham, and an executive member of the Association of Teachers and Lecturers
