Opinion: Debate - Is it right to allow parents to check for bannedworkers?

1 min read
According to junior children's minister Maria Eagle, the Government is considering allowing parents to check if people have been banned from working with children as part of its response to the Bichard Inquiry.

YES - Steve Alexander, chief executive, Pre-school Learning Alliance

The alliance supports initiatives that give additional power to parents. However, without more detail, this extension of access to informationdoes present questions and concerns. A properly administered CriminalRecords Bureau check and comprehensive referencing should give parentsthe assurances they need, but inadequacies in this system have led totragic outcomes and heightened anxiety. We feel we should make theexisting systems work more effectively.

NO BUT - Martin Ward, deputy general secretary, Secondary HeadsAssociation

I am doubtful about the practicalities of parents conducting such checksthemselves. I am not sure how Maria Eagle would envisage doing thissince it would mean it is possible to access to child protectionregisters. There would be all sorts of issues about privacy for thepeople on it, not all of whom are terrible criminals.
