When did you first work together? Brett: "It was just over two years ago. Paul's school referred him to the Extended Chances programme we run here in Devon. The programme helps young people who aren't achieving in mainstream education and provides them with an alternative curriculum. In Paul's case, school wasn't for him, so he was playing truant a lot and getting involved in antisocial behaviour and drugs."
Paul: "I was 14 at the time and didn't really give a toss about anything. I just wanted to do my own thing and not go to school."
How did you get through to Paul? Brett: "We ran lots of fun activities with him at first. It was a great way of getting to know him. Straight away we established that he was actually really self-motivated and intelligent. He just needed someone to point him in the right direction."
