Obituary: Nigel Williams loses cancer fight

Nigel Williams, the children's commissioner for Northern Ireland, died last week following a two-year battle with cancer.

He became the province's first commissioner in October 2003.

Barney McNeany, chief executive and acting commissioner at thecommissioner's office, said: "We knew the impact Nigel made on thosearound him, and the children and young people he worked for andwith."

Williams' main achievements as commissioner included the completion of amajor investigation into child protection vetting in Northern Irelandand a review of speech and language therapy (see news, p10).

A remembrance board has been opened on the commissioner's web site topay tribute.

Williams, who was 51, is survived by his wife Heather and fourchildren.
