The trust, established in 1964, supports marginalised young people. Sheppard also played a key role in getting churches to prioritise youth work.
Having established the Mayflower Family Centre in London's Canning Town, he became a full-time youth worker for a year. "It was the most taxing time of my life," he told Young People Now in 1989. "I have an enormous respect for youth workers. The exhaustion at the end of an evening with young people who hurt and may take it out on the person they trust is the most emotionally draining thing."
