NYA Update: Conference to investigate youth work's role in the troubled families agenda

The National Youth Agency, as part of its programme of work with the Local Government Association, is to hold a free one-day conference to provide senior managers with an insight into the role of youth work in the troubled families agenda.

The government has committed to transform the lives of England’s 120,000 most troubled families by 2015 and youth work plays a vital role in achieving this goal.

The free event, which will be held in Birmingham on 12 September 2012, aims to equip senior managers with the knowledge to support them in fulfilling this agenda locally.

Susan Quinn, National Youth Agency national programme manager, commented: “Local authorities will be able to claim up to £4,000 for each family they transform on a payment-by-results basis. However, addressing the underlying factors of youth crime and antisocial behaviour, improving school attendance and getting adults back on the path to work requires a multi-agency approach, and one that must include youth worker and youth work methodologies.

“Birmingham is reported to have the most troubled families in England, with an estimated 4,180, so it is right that we are holding our conference here. We are carrying out research into the ways in which youth services are engaged with the troubled families agenda and this event will help inform the work going forward.”

This event is aimed at senior managers within local authorities and priority will be given to these delegates on a first-come first-served basis. Delegates from other organisations will be placed on a waiting list for spaces.
