Nursery to close after child death

1 min read Early Years
A Cambridgeshire nursery where a baby died after choking on a piece of apple is to shut down.

The Just Learning nursery in Cambourne closed temporarily in April 2006 after 10-month-old Georgia Hollick's death, which was later judged accidental by an inquest. On reopening, the nursery struggled with Ofsted inspections and was served with a compliance notice six months after her death.

An inspection in January 2007 ruled the nursery to be satisfactory but, after an inadequate Ofsted rating last December, it has decided to close for good.

In a statement Just Learning said: "The decision was taken after the company reviewed the 'inadequate' rating and was made aware of a serious breach of recruitment policy last year involving a former staff member. The board also considered the impact of media scrutiny and concluded that the retention of high-quality staff would be virtually impossible in the foreseeable future."
