Nursery care: Government must do more on quality

The Government must restate its commitment to quality assurance for nurseries in the wake of a critical BBC investigation into early years care, a sector leader has demanded.

Rosemary Murphy, chief executive of the National Day Nurseries Association, was disappointed that the Department for Education and Skills (DfES) had not done more to promote quality to raise standards, including raising the profile of its own Investors in Children accreditation programme.

"If the scheme is good, it promotes reflective practice," she said. "It makes people really look at training and work as a team. It's probably the best indication that a parent has got that a nursery is trying hard."

Murphy claimed that Government targets aimed at boosting the quality of childcare had fallen by the wayside due to the rapid expansion of the sector.
