Nurseries: Welsh language project wins funds

A project to develop the use of Welsh in nurseries has gained funding from the Welsh Language Board.

The National Day Nurseries Association Cymru was awarded the 8,000 grant after it carried out research revealing that nearly nine outof 10 nurseries were committed to teaching Welsh but felt they neededextra resources to do it effectively.

The research, which is set to be published in full later this month,found that just six per cent of nurseries were fully bilingual, althoughthree quarters said they used some Welsh. The language board cash willgo towards employing a part-time worker to deliver the Stepping Stonesto Nurture Welsh project.

The association will work with 30 nurseries and provide informationabout Welsh reading materials as well as producing bilingual leaflets.
