The association spoke out after interim statistics from the Departmentfor Education and Skills revealed that 79 per cent of four-year-olds innursery education were attending school-based services.
Purnima Tanuku, chief executive of the association, said: "We believethat the number of three- and four-year-olds accessing their freeentitlement in schools is a cause for concern. Day nurseries in theprivate and voluntary sectors have extensive experience in the care andeducation of the under-fives and we believe it is important thatchildren receive their free entitlement in an age-appropriateenvironment."
