It is also part of the board's keenness to see 90 per cent of young people in secure accommodation placed within 50 miles of their home.
The move is most significant at Onley YOI, in Rugby, Warwickshire, where all 240 of its places are being withdrawn. Castington YOI, in Northumberland, will be reduced from 280 to 160 beds. However, following a positive inspection report, bed numbers at Ashfield YOI, near Bristol, will increase from 212 to 300.
Last year, the number of beds at Ashfield was reduced because of concerns about standards at the institution.
Many of the institutions are not operating at capacity because of the fall in the number of young males in custody.
