Numbers game: Young carers

1 min read

The findings were contained in a Loughborough University study, unveiled at UK Youth's recent Perspectives on Young Carers conference. Young Carers in the UK - the 2004 Report examined the lives of 6,178 young carers aged between five and 18. It was commissioned by Carers UK and The Children's Society.

Most of the sample cared for parents or siblings with a disability or mental health problem. The young carers mainly provided general nursing, childcare and domestic care. Just under 80 per cent provided emotional support as well.

The researchers said young carers often found it harder to make friends and many missed school. Young carers also leave home later than their peers.
