The research shows that the presence of a school council has positive benefits in terms of pupils' behaviour, academic achievement and morale.
The four-year study, conducted by School Councils UK and Essex County Council, looked at 443 schools in Essex to compare the progress made with a similar study in 1998.
Steven Brand, personal, social, health education and citizenship curriculum development adviser at Essex County Council, explained: "The research was conducted solely within Essex and looked at the extent of provision of school councils in the county. There will be opportunities for rolling the study out to more of the county and we are looking at developing a second stage of research in July. This would look at issues such as the value of pupils' views in evaluation of teaching and whole-school development plans. It won't involve just asking young people about the school tuck shop."
