About a quarter of seven to 18-year-olds in the UK have hay fever, according to research by BMRB International. In its worst form it causes a young person to miss lessons, affecting exam results and possibly even derailing an academic career.
Up to a quarter of young hay fever sufferers have had symptoms severe enough to keep them away from school. This figure suggests that about 500,000 children and young people could be missing school lessons and activities because of hay fever.
The research was carried out for herbal medicine firm Herbal Concepts and its findings correspond to a study for medical charity Allergy UK, which suggests that a quarter of 13 to 21-year-olds have hay fever.
