Northern Ireland: Teenager becomes first to receive ASBO

1 min read

The Police Service of Northern Ireland gave the 15-year- old, who lives in Coleraine in County Antrim, an interim ASBO restricting his behaviour and movements.

A court hearing to decide whether to impose a full ASBO on the boy, who has not yet been named, is set for June.

Matt Crozier, a youth worker at Include Youth, which opposes ASBOs, said: "The young person in question has been completely perplexed about ASBOs because he didn't know anything about them. He is already known to the statutory authorities but none of the agencies were even consulted over his situation or support needs." Crozier added that while he thinks the court will not name and shame the teenager, "everyone knows who he is in Coleraine, which could put him in danger of paramilitary attack". The police have indicated that they have a number of further ASBOs due to be announced.
