Northern Ireland: Justice protocol raises concerns

Northern Ireland Alternatives fears that the protocol, which sets standards for restorative justice schemes, could also force it to close unless it complies with its requirement to work closely with the police. David Hanson, justice minister for Northern Ireland, said: "This is absolutely non-negotiable."

Schemes that do not sign up will not receive funding. But Northern Ireland Alternatives fears the protocol could damage relationships with young people who currently take part in the scheme as an alternative to entering the criminal justice system. The protocol would force the organisation to engage the young people with the criminal justice system.

A spokesperson for the Northern Ireland Office said: "The protocol will be going out for consultation soon."
