News roundup: adoption reforms, counselling service, and childhood depression

Attempts to stop government adoption reforms fail; online counselling service extended to young adults; and mothers increase the risk of children suffering mental health problems if they are depressed during pregnancy, all in the news today.

Amendments to the Children and Families Bill aimed at preventing government plans to allow the removal of councils from the adoption approval process, have failed. The amendments, put forward by Lord Storey and Baroness Hamwee, were withdrawn following a debate on the Bill in the House of Lords on Wednesday. Education minister Lord Nash said the reforms were needed to “stimulate change” in the adoption system.

The government has awarded £500,000 to children’s charity Mindfull to extend its  online advice service for children and young people. The service, previously aimed at 11- to 17-year-olds, will now offer advice on issues such as depression and anxiety to young people up to the age of 25. MindFull is a social network developed by charity BeatBullying.
