The coalition's hope that Sure Start will be targeted to reach only the poorest families, and increasing financial pressures facing childcare providers are just two of the concerns for the early years sector in the run up to the spending review.
Helen Willis, lead officer at children's services union Aspect, says: "There just isn't any fat to be cut. Early years is already funded much less than later phases. There is a real possibility that cuts will mean the sector loses quality and a skilled workforce.
"There is still a long way to go in terms of plans to up-skill and bring new people into the sector - it's important the drive towards things like the graduate leader fund isn't undermined."
