Marion Davis takes over as president of the Association of Directors of Children's Services from Kim Bromley-Derry on 1 April amid deep spending cuts and unrest over inspections, on the eve of a general election. Lauren Higgs asks them about the ongoing challenges.

Kim Bromley-Derry has had a hectic year. From Lord Laming's child protection proposals to social work reform and new Ofsted inspections, the past 12 months have been tough.

But the outgoing president of the Association of Directors of Children's Services (ADCS) plays it down.

"It has been quite challenging," he says. "But probably no more than any other year."

He admits that his presidency has been defined by the repercussions of the Baby Peter case: "Usually in the aftermath of a case like this there is media and public interest but that then starts to wane. In this case it has been sustained and is still as great as it was a year ago."
