News in brief: Underage drinking - Police use children in sting campaign

Children under 18 will be sent into off-licences and bars in a sting campaign to tackle underage drinking.

Vendors will be named and shamed in a Home Office project that was launched last week after publication of the British Crime Survey.

Although crime in England and Wales has remained stable, its pattern has changed.

A Home Office spokeswoman said that although figures for youth crime were unavailable, action would focus on underage drinking because criminal activity was now more related to anti-social behaviour and alcohol-related violence.

The survey found that alcohol accounts for around half of all violent crime.

The Police Standards Unit and the Association of Chief Police Officers will head the campaign.
