The House of Lords has ruled that Section 55 of the Nationality, Immigration and Asylum Act 2002, which denies support to asylum seekers who do not make immediate claims, breaches human rights law. Although children are exempt, research has found existing refugee families help other families denied support and that this pressure can be damaging to children.
