News brief: A model method: Children 'shape' word definitions indyslexia programme

Using modelling clay, children with dyslexia model the definition of words so they can create an image in their heads of what it means, a method used by Davis Dyslexia Correction Programmes.

Students use clay to make a three-dimensional model of the meaning ofeach word, together with a model of the letters of the words. Developingthe ability to think with symbols helps them learn to read more easily. The directors of the Davis Learning Foundation have launched TheLearning People, a national network that will provide programmes inpartnership with Davis facilitators across the UK. They are looking tocontract existing Davis facilitators to affiliate to the scheme and topart-sponsor others to train to become licensed facilitators.
