NCB: Short breaks still too unreliable

1 min read
The Every Disabled Child Matters campaign (EDCM) has launched No Going Back! Parents' Expectations of Short Breaks, the second of three reports charting parent's experiences of short breaks.

The report shows that, following investment under the Aiming High for Disabled Children programme, parents are experiencing improved levels and quality of short breaks. However, much more remains to be done to ensure that reliable short break services are available to families with disabled children. No Going Back! reveals that too many parents are told they are not eligible for short breaks, are offered inappropriate provision or have to repeatedly provide training to short break workers before feeling confident that they can care for their child.

Christine Lenehan, EDCM board member and director of the Council for Disabled Children, welcomed the early focus that the government has given to improving access to short breaks for families with disabled children.
