NCB NOW: West Sussex pupils speak out on travel

1 min read
A new internet portal developed by NCB's Young TransNet team aims to improve school journeys in West Sussex.

Developed in partnership with West Sussex County Council, the new web site will help schools produce their own travel plans.

The site features a "travel plan wizard". Pupils and teachers can use the facility by completing an online survey about their travel habits.

Drawing on this information, the wizard generates a tailored action plan for improving school journeys.

The portal also allows transport planners at West Sussex County Council to view pupils' comments and suggestions on improving travel.

Lieutenant Colonel Tex Pemberton, West Sussex cabinet member for highways and transport, said: "It is much healthier for children to walk or cycle to school where possible, and we are also keen to promote public transport and car sharing by parents and teachers.

"The new programme developed for us by Young TransNet will be a very useful new tool, and I will be following its progress closely."

Under the Government's new strategy for improving school journeys, schools producing their own travel action plans will be entitled to apply for up to 10,000 in capital grant funding from 2005.
