NCB Now: The impact of academy schools

As pupils return to school this month, some children will be returning to an academy school established under the Academies Act 2010.

The act aims to raise standards by creating publicly-funded independent schools with greater freedoms and flexibility. Thirty-two schools have converted to academy status under the new legislation in time for the new school term. During the passage of the act, there was concern over the limited parliamentary time allowed for scrutiny and the lack of a requirement to consult with children, parents, local authorities and the community. An amendment now requires that, prior to conversion to academy status, governing bodies must consult with "persons they think appropriate".

The Early Childhood Forum and the Special Educational Consortium at NCB have lobbied to ensure that freedom and flexibility under the act would not mean reduced entitlements, opportunities and protections for children. Under the law, academies are required to implement the Early Years Foundation Stage.
