Academies will honour admissions and SEN codes, confirms minister

1 min read Education
New academies will be required to abide by existing laws on admissions and pupils with special educational needs (SEN), the coalition government has confirmed.

In a letter to members of the House of Lords and the Special Educational Consortium, junior schools minister Lord Jonathan Hill tried to dispel fears about the Academies Bill currently passing through government.

His reassurance comes after several members of the House of Lords and the Special Educational Consortium warned the legislation could allow academies to flout SEN and admissions duties.

Hill stated that academies would have to comply with the School Admissions Code and the SEN code of practice. The schools will also have to prioritise looked-after children in admissions arrangements.

"We are absolutely committed to ensuring academies play a full and fair role in meeting the needs of children with SEN," he said. "Parents and children will have the same safeguards they enjoy at the moment."
