NCB Now: Sex education to be a statutory subject

1 min read
The Sex Education Forum (SEF) welcomes the government proposal to make personal, social, health and economic (PSHE) education a statutory subject in all schools. The proposal was announced at the forum's 21st birthday conference on 23 October. The PSHE proposal includes sex and relationships education, which is a landmark move supported by many young people, teachers and parents, who have repeatedly asked for guidance on this topic.

Schools minister Jim Knight said: "This is a bold step and a necessary one. Modern life is increasingly complex and we have a duty to equip our young people with the knowledge and skills to deal with it. It's vital this information doesn't come from playground rumour or mixed messages from the media. We need structured teaching that emphasises the importance of family relationships."

He added: "Parents bring up children, not schools or governments, but schools can help guide them through the maze of issues and prepare them for the difficult transition from childhood to adulthood. We will ensure there is flexibility for schools to tailor lessons to reflect the values and beliefs of the parents and communities they serve."
