NCB Now: Raising early achievement in literacy

1 min read
The Early Childhood Unit (ECU) has worked with the University of Sheffield and eight children's centres in Oldham and Sheffield to deliver a successful first year of the Big Lottery-funded, Making it Real project.

More than 120 children and their families have received a series of visits at home and attended events based around the four main aspects of emergent literacy - books, songs and rhymes, early mark making and environmental print. The visits and events have included walks, train rides, book sharing, singing, enjoying tea and stories, and even taking a ride on the Sheffield wheel.

The Real project enhances parents' confidence as educators of their own children. It supports parents in recognising how their children develop and how to create opportunities for emerging literacy through everyday activities. There have been positive outcomes for children's language, literacy and social development - as well as for parents' knowledge of how their children learn. The evidence will be collated and written summaries will be available on the ECU and Parents, Early Years and Learning websites from the autumn.
