NCB Now: Project gives disabled children a voice

Disabled children and young people are currently an almost invisible group in society. It seems that the more complex their needs are, the more invisible they become. The Making Ourselves Heard project from the Council of Disabled Children is about ensuring every disabled child's right to be heard becomes a reality.

The project, based at NCB, aims to change the current situation ofdisabled children being ignored and give them direct access togovernment and policy makers. A network of disabled young people andorganisations that support them will be set up to work on mapping andpublicising the work of those who get it right, promoting the voices ofdisabled young people so their success stories are heard, and pushingfor the inclusion of disabled children and young people in organisationswho are involved in participation.

Kate Martin, senior development officer for Making Ourselves Heard'said: "We have to remember disabled children have the same rights asother children to be active citizens and participate in decisions andissues that affect them."
