NCB Now: Playday 2007 - what next?

1 min read
Playday 2007 (the 20th anniversary) was a big success, with more events than ever before. "Playday has helped highlight the fundamental importance of play to childhood for the last 20 years," commented MP Gerry Sutcliffe.

Last year's theme, Our streets too!, highlighted the need for change so that children, young people and their families can feel confident about playing in streets and areas near their homes.

Campaign research revealed a worrying decline in children's use of public space for play near their homes. The ICM opinion poll showed 71 per cent of adults played outside their homes every day when they were children, compared with just 21 per cent of children today.

Play England received an invitation from the government to discuss the findings. Some of the campaign's key asks were also included within The Children's Plan in December 2007. The government pledged to work with local authority planners to create more child-friendly spaces and bring in more 20mph speed zones and home zones.
