NCB Now: Participation rights - journey has just begun

1 min read
Article 12 of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC) enables children and young people to have a more active role in the process of shaping their lives by guaranteeing their right to express their views freely on all matters affecting them, and the right to be heard in any judicial or administrative proceedings that affect them.

NCB takes pride in its achievements in ensuring that, institutionally, the voices of children and young people are heard more and more. For example, we campaigned for the voices of younger children to be heard as part of the Childcare Bill 2006 and offer ongoing support to the sector to enable practitioners to meaningfully engage with children and young people, particularly those who are seldom heard, such as disabled children, younger children and those in care. Furthermore, we work within a partnership to ensure that marginalised young people have a voice in local service inspections, as part of the Youth4U - Young Inspectors programme. But this is only the beginning.
