The new gender equality duty created by the Westminster parliamentthrough the Equality Act 2006, will be the focus of a Children inScotland conference, Fathers' Footsteps: Where is the Gender AgendaLeading for Fathers and Their Children?, to be held in Edinburgh on 11June.
Although the main intended outcome of this duty is to promote equalityfor women, it also has important implications for men, families andyoung people. The duty comprises: a general duty that applies across theUK; and duties specific to Wales, England and Scotland.
The general duty states that public authorities must eliminate sexdiscrimination and sexual harassment, as well as promote genderequality. It came into force on 6 April this year.
