NCB Now: New book explores natural play

A new book published by Play England and written by Stuart Lester and Martin Maudsley, challenges the view that children today would rather stay inside watching television or playing computer games than play outside in their local natural environments.

Stressing children's biological drive to play and affiliate with nature, Play, Naturally: A Review of Children's Natural Play, explores the wide-ranging values and benefits arising from children's play in natural settings and identifies the barriers compromising children's right and natural drive to play.

Drawing on academic texts, newspaper and journal articles, research studies and working practice, the review indicates connections across disciplines and opens the possibility of reaffirming childhood as a period of natural emergence.

The substantial appendix, bibliography and useful examples of natural play areas and schemes also makes the title a practical resource.

Adrian Voce, director of Play England, said: "Now is the time for the play sector to look afresh at how provision can give children back their chance to enjoy nature."
