Play England, part of NCB, has commissioned a major comprehensive literature review focusing on free play and the early years.

Free Play in Early Childhood draws on a range of views, includingobservational and research-based studies and the work of pioneers andwell-respected writers in the field. In doing so, it provides insightsfrom different professional perspectives, types of early years provisionand theoretical perspectives.

It also demonstrates the importance of ensuring all children haveenvironments and opportunities for free play in their earlychildhood.

Topics covered include historical and modern perspectives and the roleof adults.

FACTS AND FIGURES ON ... School funding

Central government funding per primary school pupil in 2005/06 was3,770. The corresponding figure for secondary school pupils was4,640.
