NCB Now: Comment - Remind young people of rights andresponsibilities

1 min read
There has been much publicity recently for a device, nicknamed "the mosquito", which is designed to emit a high frequency noise to drive young people away from local shops. Last month it was banned in Wales among concerns that it violated human rights. However, the same device is still being marketed in England.

But what rights do young people have? There is much confusion over theissue. For example, the UK signed the UN Convention on the Rights of theChild in 1991, but, unlike the European Convention on Human Rights whichunderpins the Human Rights Act 1998, it has never been fullyincorporated into UK law.

In recent months Young NCB has been working with Unicef UK and theChildren's Rights Alliance for England to run talkshops informingchildren and young people about their rights. These events, funded bythe Office of the Children's Commissioner, have highlighted the need tomaintain awareness and to continue to hold policy makers and others tothis standard.
