The 20-year anniversary of the convention marks an important point in the history of children's rights. Never before have the rights of children been so widely recognised. The treaty has inspired changes in laws to better protect children, changed the way international organisations work with children, and supported an agenda to protect children in conflict situations. The growth of institutions specialising in child rights has resulted in a powerful voice for raising awareness of children's rights worldwide.
However, the challenge today for every country is to take stronger measures to further protect and fulfil the promises made in the convention. This 20th anniversary reminds us that much has been gained in international children's rights, but there is a lot left to do to ensure every child in the world can enjoy their fundamental rights.
