NCB Now: Comment - Children must be a part of the respect solution

Two months on from the general election, it is clear that 'respect' continues to be the buzzword of New Labour's third term, in schools as well as the wider community.

Current initiatives include a government working group, chaired by Sir Alan Steer, to advise on classroom behaviour and discipline.

There is no doubt that low-level disruption in schools is a serious matter.

Not only does it contribute to the number of teachers leaving the profession; it can also have a damaging effect on children and young people's learning.

As Sir Alan Steer warns, however, in addressing this issue we must be careful not to demonise young people.

In particular, it is crucial that they are seen not simply as the problem but as part of the solution. That means listening to what they have to say.
