NCB Now: Childminding

Childminding in England is currently in a period of transition.

The number of childminders registered has dropped in recent years, possibly in reaction to regulatory requirements and the increase in the number of places in group provision. Childminding, viewed as a child-centred form of childcare that takes place within a home environment, has become more formalised and potentially less viable in today's early years policy context, where the focus is increasingly on early education rather than care. There are some calls for increased flexibility in the regulation of childminding and other forms of home-based care for children.

However, childminders themselves have organised and campaigned strongly within the National Childminding Association for the past 40 years to raise the status and standards of their profession and are now more highly qualified and provide better services for children than ever before.
