He was speaking at the event, which took place in Birmingham from 19 to21 October 2005, in his capacity as chair of the Children's WorkforceNetwork.
"The challenge is to embed the principle of child-centred workingthroughout the training and development of a wide range ofprofessionals, including teachers, health workers, social care workersand youth workers, to form an integrated, qualified workforce," hesaid.
"The process will not be an easy one, and it will involve sacrifices byall the different groupings within the sector. The eventual goal,however, is to create a profession that can genuinely meet the needs ofchildren and young people."
The Children's Workforce Network is a strategic body bringing togetherthe relevant sector skills councils - including the Children's WorkforceDevelopment Council - and other partners. Its aim is to drive andsupport the development of a coherent, skilled and effective children'sworkforce in England. Paul Ennals was recently reappointed as its chairfor a second one-year term.
