NCB Now: Addiction workers need more support

1 min read
Professionals working with families where there is a parental drug problem need support if they are to collaborate to protect children and improve their life chances.

A new publication, Adult Drug Problems, Children's Needs: Assessing theimpact of parental drug use, aims to help social workers and otherpractitioners who work with families where parents misuse drugs. Thepublication is the first in NCB's Toolkit series.

The toolkit, which has been developed with funding from the Departmentof Health, draws on the in-depth work of two local authorities thathighlights obstacles to effective practice and which explores awhole-systems approach.

"Children's services are often closely involved with children whoseparents misuse drugs, but what is needed is greater collaborationbetween all those working with these families," said co-author Di Hart, principal officer in NCB's children in public care unit. "Parents andchildren may also be reluctant to talk about the impact of the problem, which can cause further barriers to meeting the child's needs. We hopethis toolkit will help practitioners to develop the confidence andskills to work effectively with these families," said Hart.
