NCB Now: Access to the streets demanded

1 min read
Following on from this year's Playday campaign (1 August), which highlighted barriers to children playing in the streets where they live, Play England and the National Children's Bureau have launched the Places to Go: Promoting Better Mobility, Transport and Travel for Children and Young People campaign.

It aims to improve access to travel and transport and increase opportunities to enjoy local streets and neighbourhoods.

Adrian Voce, director of Play England, said: "Traffic and a lack of access to affordable transport are major barriers to children and young people enjoying their local neighbourhoods, playing in the street and getting to where they want to go. It is very well opening up more youth clubs and skate parks, but can they get there? Much more needs to be done to ensure young people can play outside where they live, travel safely around their local neighbourhoods and communities as pedestrians and cyclists, and have access to good, affordable public transport."
