This often includes literature reviews, interviews, focus groups and case studies and can involve structured observation, surveys, self-evaluation and involving children and young people as young researchers.
I work closely with members of the department (many of whom, like me, have practical experience of working with children and young people), other researchers and practice specialists. Together with others, I produce publications that are accessible, oriented to policy and practice and illuminate underlying social contexts and issues.
I work on several projects that span NCB - with a mix of funding from external commissions, grants and cross-NCB collaborations - at any one time and my work spans the policy and practice development work of the organisation. The main focus of my current work is health and wellbeing. The other main subject areas in which the department works include: the structure and organisation of children's services; looked-after children and care leavers; early years; play; and participation.
