National Youth Agency: The long road from Zimbabwe

1 min read Youth Work
National Youth Agency young intern Belinda Fumai tells her story...

My name is Belinda and I came to the United Kingdom in June 2004. I was only 12 years old and really nervous. I didn't think I would fit in. I was made to believe only white people lived in this country, and I was afraid I would have racist threats thrown at me. I'm also big so thought I may be bullied. Fortunately that never happened. I was made welcome in this country and managed to make friends easily.

Everyone was really nice; they all seemed interested about where I was from and my history. I was really lucky. I used to go to an English school in Zimbabwe so it prepared me; otherwise I would have found it really difficult to communicate with people here.
