1 min read
Echoing the aims of The National Youth Agency-supported End Child Poverty campaign on a global scale, World Vision is encouraging children and young people in the UK to get involved in fundraising ideas and activities. This will culminate in a 24-hour famine from 14 to 16 March.

TV presenter Fearne Cotton is fronting the campaign and World Visionrecently took her on a trip to Chennai, India. The following is one ofseveral case studies to originate from the project.

In the heart of Chennai lies a huge dump yard surrounded by slums. Manyfamilies and children must survive here - they pick recyclables from thewaste and sell them to shops for tiny amounts. Manikandan's family isone of many that strive to make a living out of this garbage collection.World Vision found nine-year-old Manikandan sorting through the garbagewith his mother. When staff initially identified him and his family, they were shocked to discover him working at such a young age and insuch poor surroundings. World Vision have since placed these children inschool and provided them with the education they need for a betterfuture.
