Fiona Blacke, chief executive of the National Youth Agency, considers the world of youth work, government, the big society and the agency's role.

It feels like the youth work world is about to undergo a seismic shift, the like of which we have not known before.

After a few years of growth, what we know is coming are massive public expenditure cuts and a consequent pulling back to the essential as opposed to the desirable, a drive on local authorities to look at others means of delivery of the youth offer and a search for cost effectiveness in every aspect of public service delivery. Holding our breath, it appears we are in the lull before the perfect storm.
