There may be more of them (and for longer periods) than previously thought, the Audit Commission study has found. Against the Odds analysed the records of 24,000 young people in 10 different areas. Among its findings were that one in four 16- to 18-year-olds were categorised as Neet at some point in a two-year period and nearly half - 43 per cent - stayed on the list for at least six months.
The longer-term effects include being three times more likely to have depression, four times more likely to be out of work, five times more likely to have a criminal record and six times less likely to have qualifications.
