National Youth Agency: Annual monitoring key findings

1 min read
Part two of highlights from the National Youth Agency's annual monitoring report of validated training programmes.

In the past few years there have been concerns about the level of Joint Negotiating Committee (JNC) supervisors supporting placements.

It is positive that this year the figure has remained in line with last year, with an overall average of 76 per cent of supervisors being JNC qualified, bringing to supervision knowledge, skills and experience of youth work to support students in their development of skills.

In the previous eight years there has been a steady reversal in the age profile of students. In 2002, 42 per cent of the new students were aged 30 to 34 or above. This year, this age range accounts for only 27 per cent. Conversely the 2002 figure for the under 21 to 24 age range was 31 per cent and this year accounts for 51 per cent of new students. This reflects that younger people are being attracted to youth work as an initial career pathway. This may be due to young people having positive experiences of youth work and also that the BA pathway appeals to those moving to higher education from A-levels.
