N Ireland focus on communication

Early Years
The head of Northern Ireland's national organisation for childcare providers has called for better communication between parents and children's centres following a series of criticisms of creches in the region.

Poor security, lack of supervision and bullying were among the complaints made to the Health & Safety Executive by parents of children attending creches, released under the Freedom of Information Act.

Teresa Heaney, director of the National Children's Nurseries Association said the association did not condone the bad practice highlighted, but stressed membership of the organisation was only granted to services that comply with the Pre-School Services Regulations.

"We suggest childcare providers and parents strive to develop good communication so that any issues can be discussed and resolved in a fair way and parents feel they can drop in at any time to see how their child is doing," she said.
