Myplace hands out millions to projects

The government has awarded more than 180m to youth projects in England as part of its Myplace initiative.

Forty-one schemes bid successfully for funding last month, including the Blackburn Youth Zone, which was awarded £5m to set up a multi-functional youth facility in the city centre.

Last November, 21 youth projects were awarded a share of £62m via the fast-track route of the programme. A further £30m will be allocated to projects later this year.

The new youth facilities will be required to open at the times that suit young people, including on Friday and Saturday nights.

Luke Wilkins, 16, from Derbyshire, who was part of the awarding panel, said: "Knowing that the money we helped to spend will help effect young people's goals in life and hopefully encourage them to become good citizens is great."
